Road trip: Italian Drawings at the Princeton University Art Museum

Getting there: 1 hour from NYC by car Princeton The Art Museum at Princeton University, famous for its extensive collection of drawings, is currently hosting a new exhibition of roughly 100 Italian master drawings. Giorgio Vasari the ‘first art historian’ referred to drawing as the father of arts. ‘Disegno’ in Italian (and ‘dessin’ in French) translates both as design and drawing, so as a designer I regret that I’ve not kept up the latter much since college.

Disegno, from the Italian word for drawing or design, carries a more complex meaning in art, involving both the ability to make the drawing and the intellectual capacity to invent the design.

The first Sunday of January is perhaps the unofficial end of the holidays in NYC. It is a happenstance stroll through Bryant Park after closing time with some impenetrable fog that smothered even the lights of the stalwart Empire State Building. The ground glistens with city lights reflected off the lubricating melted snow.
